Columbia University College of Dental Medicine

The Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program is a one year residency program for internationally trained dentists whose purpose is to develop and enhance the didactic knowledge, clinical skills, and related professional interests of the recently graduated dental student while stressing the general dental care of complex medically compromised and developmentally disabled hospitalized patients. The second-year which is an optional position offers additional responsibilities in administration, teaching and research, and additional training for proficiency in clinical general dentistry.

The AEGD program provides residents with the training and experience in comprehensive multidisciplinary oral health care at a level of skill and complexity beyond that accomplished in predoctoral training. This training focuses on different types of patients, including patients with special needs. The program emphasizes resident training in clinical examination, diagnosis, treatment planning, and provision of sequenced comprehensive care that addresses the patient's needs, desires, and limitations. Patients with very complex medical histories, multifaceted infectious diseases, developmental disabilities, geriatric medical complications, and those patients who cannot be examined, diagnosed, or treatment planned in a clinical outpatient environment are directly referred to the AEGD program.
